What is Ledger® Live?
Ledger® Live is the official management app for Ledger® hardware wallets. It allows you to add accounts, monitor balances, send and receive cryptocurrencies, install blockchain apps, and manage your portfolio securely. All private keys remain on your Ledger® device, ensuring maximum security.
Before you start: System requirements and safety tips
- Desktop or laptop running Windows 10+, macOS 10.14+, or Linux.
- A Ledger® hardware wallet (Ledger® Nano X or Nano S Plus) with its original cable.
- Your 24-word recovery phrase written offline — never enter it on a computer or phone.
- Stable internet connection to download Ledger® Live and check for updates.
Important: Only download Ledger® Live from the official Ledger® website. Never share your recovery phrase — Ledger® support will never ask for it.
Step-by-step: Install Ledger® Live
- Download: Go to the official Ledger® Live page and select your platform (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
- Verify: (Optional but recommended) Check the file hash/signature against the official Ledger® values.
- Install: Run the installer and follow prompts. On macOS, drag the app to Applications; on Windows, accept the installer wizard.
- Launch: Open Ledger® Live. On first run, you can choose to set up a new device or connect an existing Ledger® wallet.
- Update: If prompted, install Ledger® Live updates and any firmware updates for your device. Confirm updates directly on the hardware device.
Initializing your Ledger® device
For a new Ledger® device, initialization is performed on the hardware itself. You’ll choose a PIN and write down your 24-word recovery phrase on the supplied card. Your recovery phrase never leaves the device, ensuring your funds remain secure.
Adding accounts in Ledger® Live
After connecting your Ledger® device:
- Open the “Accounts” tab and click “Add account”.
- Select the cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).
- Open the corresponding app on your Ledger® device and confirm the account addition.
- Ledger® Live will synchronize with the blockchain and display your balance and transaction history.
Send and receive crypto
To receive funds, select the account and click “Receive”. Verify the address on both your Ledger® device and Ledger® Live. To send crypto, click “Send”, input the recipient address and amount, then confirm on your device. Always verify details on the device before approving transactions.
Manage apps and firmware
The Ledger® Live “Manager” tab lets you install or remove apps on your Ledger® device. Only install apps you need, and always verify firmware updates on the device. Firmware updates include security fixes and new coin support.
Portfolio and preferences
Ledger® Live provides a portfolio overview, price tracking, and customizable settings such as currency, language, and network selection. Third-party services like staking and swaps are accessible but require careful review; Ledger® Live keeps your private keys secure on your device.
Troubleshooting common issues
Ledger® Live doesn’t detect the device
Try a different USB cable or port, ensure the device is unlocked, and open the correct app on your Ledger® device.
Firmware or app update errors
Ensure Ledger® Live is up to date. Restart Ledger® Live and your computer. Follow official instructions if firmware updates fail — do not attempt unverified fixes.
Missing balance or transactions
Ensure the correct network is selected. Re-sync the account or remove and re-add it to refresh balances.
